Why A Huge Labour Opinion Poll Lead Is a Disaster - For Labour.
According to YouGov, in an opinion poll published in the Times newspaper, the Labour Party currently enjoys a massive lead over the Conservatives amongst the voters, with 54% of them saying they would vote Labour if a General Election were called tomorrow, as opposed to a mere 21% for the Tories, 7% for the Liberal Democrats, 6% for the Green Party, 5% for the SNP, 4% for Reform UK, 1% for Plaid Cymru and 1% for "Other Parties".
Polling was conducted between 28th-29th September 2022, with a sample size of 1,712 - a tiny percentage of the adult population of Great Britain! See: YouGov/Times. One marvels at how so much weight can be given to the opinions of such a pathetically small handful of people.
The poll doesn't just show a reduction of 7% in Conservative support, but a 2% reduction in Liberal Democrat support, which both account for the 9% increase in Labour support. The Greens are supposed to have lost 1% to the right-wing populist "Reform UK"! That idea is both absurd and rather disturbing, to say the least, but this is 1% of 1,712 people. YouGov also argue that LibDem voters are now saying they will switch support to Labour.
Really? If they are, then they can only ever have been the most superficial of Liberal Democrat voters in the first place, with no real idea what they were voting for. They will be people who are willing to switch from a pro-EU, pro-PR Party to one whose Leader is staunchly anti-PR, in spite of the recent vote of his Party's Conference on the issue, and in spite of the fact that 83% of his Party's membership are in favour of Proportional Representation, and is also staunchly pro-Brexit, even though it is abundantly clear that Brexit is harming this country's economy. He is even unwilling to contemplate the UK re-joining the Single Market.
This is the problem - and it is a very big one - with this huge Labour lead in the opinion polls, caused by the missteps and gross unpopularity of the Liz Truss Government - it can only serve to make an arrogant and inflexible Labour leader even more arrogant and inflexible, even less willing to cooperate with other political Parties, and even less willing to change his mind about policy.
We have a Sheriff of Nottingham Government, taking from the poor to give to the rich. Where is Robin Hood when you need him? The Right Honourable Sir Keir Starmer, KC, MP, he is NOT!
